Welcome to the World of Rachel Mason

Rachel Mason Hears the Sound
by Cindy Lovell Oliver

Welcome to RachelMason.com - the online home for fans of Rachel Mason and the cast of characters from the 5th grade classroom of Mrs. Juarez.  The goal of this site is to spotlight children's literature, understand resiliency and at-risk children, promote empathy, and foster an understanding of special circumstances of diversity.  The goal is also to have fun, connect with other fans of Rachel, and share your unique ideas and opinions.  RMHTS is the first in a series of books that focuses on challenges children face every day - some visible, some invisible.  Each book will feature a student from the same classroom.  Although all of the children have a few things in common, such as being classmates in the same 5th grade classroom, they all experience unique personal situations - maybe even some that you can relate to.  Rachel's dilemma is common to many children - she has a loving dad she adores, with just one catch: He sometimes drinks too much.  And when this happens, sometimes he is physically abusive to Rachel's mom.  Not a happy story, but still one of hope.  Join Rachel and her classmates as they sort through the challenges of childhood under the watchful eye of their favorite teacher, Mrs. Juarez.

The second book in the Rachel Mason series, Not This Sunday, will be released in the fall of 2006.  Although Rachel pops up in this book, the main character is her classmate, Kenny Evans.  (Do you remember Kenny from the first book?)  Kenny's situation also involves his dad, but his challenge is entirely different from Rachel's.  You see, his dad has been sent to prison for a crime Kenny is sure he did not commit.  And now Kenny is facing some big changes in his life.  Watch the web site or your local bookstore for Not This Sunday.

There are many features to this site, from your thoughts about Rachel's future to stories about the author.  We hope you will peruse the pages, and if you like what you see, email this site to a friend!
